January 9 marks the birthday of Jimmy Page, one of the most influential guitarists in rock history.

Jimmy Page’s playing is often associated with power and mystique, but at its core lies something very precise: control. His bends, phrasing, and timing show a deep understanding of pitch and tension — elements that separate expressive guitar playing from guesswork.

To celebrate his birthday, we’re sharing a free interactive MatchMySound exercise inspired by that exact approach.

The Guitar Lick: Precision Meets Expression

In this lick:

  • Half-step, whole-step, and minor 3rd bends are used to shape the line

  • The bends create tension and release against the harmony

  • Accuracy matters more than speed

A key technical detail:

Bend the G string down with your index finger on the half-step bend and release it cleanly in the second measure.

This kind of disciplined bending is exactly what gives Page’s playing its vocal, controlled quality.

Practice Tip: Train Bend Accuracy

Use a chromatic tuner while practicing this lick:

  • Check that each bend reaches the intended pitch

  • Listen closely to how the bent note resolves

  • Focus on consistency and control rather than force

With MatchMySound, you can slow the exercise down, practice it in sections, and get clear feedback on how accurately you’re hitting each note.
