Eddie Van Halen was born on January 26, and his impact on electric guitar playing is impossible to overstate. From tone to technique, Eddie constantly pushed boundaries — while maintaining remarkable precision.

To mark his birthday, we’re sharing a MatchMySound exercise inspired by one of his most distinctive sounds: tapping harmonics.

The Guitar Lick — Tapping Harmonics in a Blues Context

This exercise features:

  • A tapping harmonic, played exactly 12 frets above the fretted note

  • Execution with the index or middle finger of the picking hand

  • Movement through the F# Blues scale

  • Resolution against an F#7 chord

The result is a lick that combines technical clarity with blues phrasing — very much in the spirit of Eddie Van Halen.

Technique Focus — Clean Harmonics and Timing

For best results:

  • Tap firmly and accurately

  • Lift the tapping finger cleanly to let the harmonic ring

  • Practice slowly to lock in timing and pitch

MatchMySound lets you slow the exercise down and practice it in sections, helping you focus on clean execution.
